According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 595,690 people will die from cancer this year alone. It’s a chilling statistic. Sure, the global medical field has spent billions of dollars researching the disease and trying to find a cure, but cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death around the world.

Beware, because you may be setting yourself up to get cancer if you eat these foods!

 

16. Microwave Popcorn

All you have to do is nuke this to enjoy. But while it’s fast and easy, eating this stuff has been scientifically proven to cause liver, testicular and pancreatic cancer. That’s because not only is there corn in this, there’s plenty of unappetizing carcinogenic chemicals in it, too. After all, how else are you going to get it to taste like butter without actually putting butter into it?

Protect your body from this nastiness and invest in a popcorn popper, then add a bit of REAL butter or olive oil.

 

15. Non-organic fruit and vegetables

They say ALL fruits and vegetables are good for you, but that’s definitely not true! You’d be disgusted at how many pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and preservatives are sprayed on non-organic fruits and vegetables — many of which have been linked to cancer. Eating non-organic produce puts you at a higher risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and prostate, testicular, pancreatic, lung and non-melanoma skin cancers. The US Agricultural Health Study found that male farmers who sprayed pesticides while farming had higher rates of prostate cancer compared to those who didn’t. They weren’t even eating the stuff! Bleh!

14. Canned tomatoes

Tomatoes are packed full of lycopene, a natural cancer fighter. But you’ll be nullifying their powers if you get tomatoes in a can. The resin that lines a tomato can contains bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic industrial chemical that has been linked to different types of cancers. Tomatoes are so acidic that they actually suck out the BPA from the lining. That means you get a good dose of BPA—yuck! If you don’t want that, stick with tomatoes stored in glass.

 

13. Processed Meats

Loads of salt, nitrites, and other preservatives all work to keep those processed meats tasty and from rotting in your fridge. But every time you eat a slice of salami or pepperoni, these carcinogenic additives accumulate in your body and make your body a toxic waste ground. Damage is caused right down to your cells, where abnormalities develop that lead to cancer and other diseases. And don’t think that cooking them will help — high temperatures actually make them more toxic!

Salmon is a great source of protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D and omega 3 fats. But if you’re not eating the wild kind, you’re in for a shock. 10. Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils that have been chemically processed to prolong their shelf life and be cheaper alternatives to other oils. But what you’re saving on cost, you’re sacrificing on health. These oils have been linked to several life-threatening issues, including cancer, birth defects and heart disease.

You don’t need to smoke a cigarette to get cancer. If you eat foods that have been smoked, you’re at risk, too. That smoked flavor in foods liked smoked salmon and barbecued meats is attributed to tar, the same cancer causing substance in cigarettes. And the smokier the food, the more tar you ingest.

A University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center study found that eating a lot of processed white flour and other high glycemic index foods can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. On top of this alarming fact, how do you think they get naturally brown flour to be so blindingly white? Manufacturers chemically-bleach the flour with chlorine gas, which destroys all beneficial nutrients. Yup, it’s pretty much the same chlorine gas that was used in chemical warfare during World War 1 and 2.

 

7. GMOs

GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. So what’s so bad about that?  Well, ever since GMO products started gracing supermarket shelves for mass consumption back in 1996, this is what’s happened:

  • Americans started getting sicker: those with 3 or more chronic illnesses increased from 7 to 13% in just under a decade.
  • More and more people have developed food allergies, many of which are life-threatening.
  • GMO plants tend to be more resistant to natural pesticides, making more harmful and carcinogenic pesticides necessary to save crops.
  • More and more children are developing Autism.
  • More and more people are suffering from reproductive and digestion problems.

One study in the The Journal of Organic Systems reports that GMOs can cause liver failure, urinary and bladder cancers, hypertension, thyroid disease, stroke, obesity, and more.

 

6. Refined Sugars

Refined sugars spike insulin levels, cause inflammation and promote weight gain — all things that can cause the dreaded C word. Whatever refined sugar it is, from regular white table sugar to high-fructose corn syrup, it’s all bad. Unfortunately, refined sugar is in just about anything, so this can be a tricky one to avoid.

Even though the label might say “diet”, there’s nothing healthy about it! “Diet” foods are heavily processed and contain chemical artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which, as you know, can cause cancer and a multitude of other fatal health issues. And haven’t you noticed that only overweight people consume this stuff? That should tell you something…

 

3. Alcohol

No harm in a couple glasses of wine or some cocktails, right? Wrong! Alcohol can increase your risk of developing at least 7 different types of cancer: mouth cancer, pharyngeal cancer (upper throat), oesophageal cancer (food pipe), laryngeal cancer (voice box), breast cancer, bowel cancer, and liver cancer. Why, you ask?

When you drink alcohol (ethanol), it’s converted into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a toxic chemical that damages DNA and stops your cells from repairing this damage. Plus, it causes liver cells to grow abnormally faster, which is all how cancer develops. Think about that the next time you’re out partying.

 

2. Red Meat

The World Health Organization says that red meat may cause colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer. Before you vegetarians rejoice, though, the findings aren’t conclusive and more research is required to prove the link. But why risk it? Consider practicing safe eating and limit your red meat consumption.

Fizzy and sweet, a can of bubbly soda is a great thirst quencher and pick-me-up — but you know why? Because it’s so packed full of sugar, about 10 packets worth, that your insulin spikes, sending you into an artificial high that cancer cells feed off of.
